DR. ZA DAVID FRENCH
I started my career as a Commando in the Royal Marines at the age of 14 and was there until I was 23. During this time I played a lot of rugby as I found it very enjoyable and a great way to keep fit.
In addition to rugby I did boxing in the Marines Navy, Combined Services and I served in South Africa & Africa.
I was also in the Kenyan Scouts for a couple of years and served alongside the renowned Mercenary Leader Mike Hore AC IC.
In 1970 I qualified as a Personal Trainer. I have taken this path and have been training people ever since. I have always had a passion for helping people and training others is a good way of helping people feel better about themselves.
After I finished my Personal Training qualification I decided to open my own gym at the boxing club in Reading, the gym became very successful and I opened 5 additional successful gyms around Reading. In addition to this I have owned public houses, restaurants and a nightclub however I have always continued to train daily alongside my clients.
I have basic fitness qualifications with YMCA, Bawla and went on to achieve an Honours degree in Sports Science and a PHD in Applied Sports Science at Birbeck University.
I have recently been researching the effects on cold-water training and the effect of training outside. This will see how much quicker or slower the recovery time and the effect on the individual is.

I’ve been widely involved in the fitness industry for over 10 years in areas ranging from mainstream leisure management to elite sport strength and conditioning. From this experience, I’ve learnt that peak physical fitness comes as a result of a good community feel coupled with regular and intense exercise which I feel we have in abundance at Urban Gym.
Our classes and training are constantly varied with a good balance between modern training techniques and some good old fashioned muscle burners. I firmly believe that the ethos and culture at Urban Gym is second to no gym I’ve been involved in and I’m looking forward to meeting and training with you.
My first goal is to build up a great atmosphere in a new Sunday Circuit class which will be an exciting, total body workout for all abilities.

9 years ago I had a brain attack (stroke) and I ended up in a wheelchair. I lost my speech. The left side of my body was completely disabled and I was obese. I knew I had to do something and that my lifestyle needed to drastically change.
Through sheer determination and self rehabilitation I managed to recover and here I am, a fully qualified personal trainer, willing to share all my experience with you and hopefully inspire and motivate you on your journey to a healthier lifestyle – focusing on strength, stamina and circuit training.
I am a Level 3 qualified Fitness Instructor and Personal Trainer and I also have a Diploma in Level 3 Exercise Referral. This allows me to work with people with different medical conditions.
